In a recent post I observed how the metalcasting industry functions as a community. This feature story from the Appleton, WI, Post-Crescent is not specifically about a metalcasting operation, though one gets mentioned. It's about the interactive nature of businesses and communities, and the lives of people who live there. In that way it will be a very recognizable tale for people who live in communities with foundries and diecasters.
It's a sad story, but for me it's a reminder that we need economic policies, business strategies, and personal habits that encourage growth. The people described in this story may be aided by federal and state programs that address some specific problems, but the Wisconsin communities mentioned here will be helped most by a broadbased revival in economic activity that will revive and prolong all the large and small businesses that are faltering now.
