Sum of all Thrills is a new theme park experience that allows guests to custom-design their own thrill ride using mathematical tools, an innovative touch-screen table, and a robotic simulator. The latest addition to
Walt Disney World's INNOVENTIONS at Epcot experience, the ride is dependent on the KUKA RoboSim 4-D Simulator.
With over 1.4 million possible programmable combinations of the KUKA Robocoaster using all six axes and six degrees of total directional freedom provided by Raytheon. The ride can add corkscrews, inversions, or steep hills to the customized stomach-turner. When the design of the ride is complete, it is saved on a personal card through a unique magnetic code. Riders take their cards to one of four robotic KUKA RoboSim 4-D simulators within the ride.
The "4" in the 4-D is provided through simulated 'wind' by controlling air movements to provide a more realistic simulation experience. The two-seat simulator (see the link above) doesn't fully enclose the riders, allowing legs and feet to dangle below. A spherical carbon-fiber hood covers the riders, immersing them into a true sensory experience through high-def video and stereo sound.
"The RoboSim 4-D Simulator is another example of the innovative and dynamic robotic technology solutions offered by KUKA Robotics," said director of new market sales for KUKA, Michael Beaupre. "It extends the possibilities of our product offering to the expanding entertainment and edutainment markets."
While I'm not sure that this is a side trip available for CastExpo this month, it might be worth checking out. Either way, kudos to KUKA for looking for new venues for its product line.
