    In-Gate Shrinkage

Our Foundry pours exclusively class 35 Grey Iron with a cupola melt. We are having problems with in-gate shrinkage. Managment here wants to add risers as a fix-all to this problem. I am of the thought that putting risers on everything is not the answer, especially with grey iron. Besides diminishing our yeild, it also creates problems with enlarged contacts to grind off in the clean up room. I'm having troubling articulating to management that in-gate shrinkage is often caused by incorrect solidification order and can be controlled by playing with in-gate thickness - without adding a riser. I think I have the correct approach but cannot fully explain why. Can anyone help? Am I of the correct thinking? Can anyone explain in more detail the importance of solidification order and how it can be controlled?

    Re: In-Gate Shrinkage

Your gates are freezing off to soon. The castings are acting as risers for the gates.Make your runners big enough to feed the gates, that should solve tne problem. Mike.
